Plug-In Solar is here

From 27 August 2026, compliant plug-in solar systems can legally be connected via a standard 13A socket in England, Wales and Scotland, subject to the new requirements.

Plug-in solar could make solar energy accessible to more UK households, including flats, smaller properties and homes where conventional rooftop solar isn’t practical.

But before you connect a new source of electricity to your home, there’s one thing worth checking:

Check your home before you connect.

Whether you need an EICR, electrical advice, solar support or simply aren’t sure where to start, tell us what you’re planning and we’ll help put you in touch with an appropriate professional.

Tell us what you need. We’ll help point you in the right direction.

The problem

Your solar system might be new. Your electrics might not be.

Plug-in solar adds electricity generation to your property’s existing electrical installation. Your wiring, circuits, sockets, consumer unit and protective devices may have been installed many years ago, and you may not know their current condition.

If you’re planning to connect solar, it’s worth understanding what you’re connecting it to. You don’t need to diagnose your electrics yourself. If you’re unsure where to start, we can help you find an appropriate professional.

What you might need?

You don’t need to know which professional you need.

An EICR is a professional inspection and test of a property’s fixed electrical installation. It can identify defects, deterioration, damage or other issues that may need attention.

Depending on your circumstances, you may instead need electrical repairs, remedial work, solar installation support or another type of professional service. You don’t need to work that out before making an enquiry.

Tell us what you’re planning, what you’ve already bought or what you’re concerned about, and we’ll use that information to help identify an appropriate professional.

Services may include:

  • Electrical inspections and EICRs
  • Electrical repairs and remedial work
  • Solar-related services
  • Installation support
  • Other relevant professional services

What happens if you have an EICR?

An EICR doesn’t automatically mean a complete rewire.

An EICR involves inspecting and testing relevant parts of the property’s fixed electrical installation. The findings are recorded using recognised classification codes:

  • C1 – Danger present
  • C2 – Potentially dangerous
  • C3 – Improvement recommended
  • FI – Further investigation required

If issues are identified, the appropriate response could be a simple repair, replacement of a component, further investigation, remedial work or, in some cases, more substantial work.

The relevant professional can explain the findings and advise on what may be appropriate.

The benefit of an inspection is simple. You know what you’re dealing with.

Important message

Don’t wait until something goes wrong. Electrical problems aren’t always obvious. There may be no sparks, burning smell, flickering lights or other visible warning signs.

If you’re introducing new electrical equipment or generation into your home, understanding the condition of the existing installation can be a sensible first step.

Check first. Then connect with confidence.

Not sure what you need?

You don’t need to understand the difference between an EICR, electrician, solar installer or other professional before you get started. Tell us what you’re planning, what you’ve already bought or what you’re concerned about, and we’ll help you work out what kind of support may be appropriate.

It’s a simple way to get started without having to research every option yourself.

Find the right professional

Your enquiry helps us understand what you’re looking for, so we can help identify a professional who is relevant to your requirements. Whether you need an electrical inspection, repairs, solar-related support or installation help, you can start with what you need rather than spending time trying to work out who to contact.

The right professional can then discuss your situation and explain your options.

No obligation

Making an enquiry doesn’t commit you to having work carried out or accepting a quotation. It’s simply a way to explore your options and get connected with a relevant professional.

You can discuss your requirements, ask questions and understand what may be involved before deciding whether you want to take things any further.

One simple starting point

Getting started doesn’t need to be complicated. You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong, which service you need or who you should contact.

Tell us about your property and what you’re hoping to do, and we’ll use that information to help point you in the right direction. One simple enquiry can help you move from researching and wondering what to do next to having a clear conversation with someone who can help.
